Plot

Gangubai Kathiawadi follows the life of Ganga Harjivandas (Alia Bhatt), a young woman from a small town lured to Mumbai by her lover with promises of a film career, only to be sold into a brothel. Forced into prostitution, Ganga transforms into Gangubai, a powerful figure in Mumbai's red-light district of Kamathipura. With grit and resilience, she rises to prominence, advocating for the rights and dignity of sex workers and becoming a beloved leader in her community. Gangubai forms alliances with influential figures, including gangster Rahim Lala (Ajay Devgn), who becomes a supportive friend and mentor. Her journey is fraught with challenges, particularly as she clashes with Razia Bai (Vijay Raaz), a rival madam who controls a significant part of Kamathipura. Determined to fight for a better future, Gangubai takes her cause to the political arena, championing the legalization of sex work and fighting for the rights of her fellow women. Through her transformation from a victim to an empowered leader, Gangubai Kathiawadi explores themes of resilience, self-respect, and the quest for justice in a society that marginalizes women like her.
